Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer: Company won't make a cellphone

NEW YORK (AP) - Microsoft Corp. has no plans to create a cellphone, preferring to focus on expanding its share of the market for cellphone software, chief executive Steve Ballmer said Wednesday.

"I don't actually think it will make sense for us to make a cellphone," Ballmer said, speaking at The Wall Street Journal's "D: All Things Digital" conference in Carlsbad, Calif.
Ballmer在华尔街时报于加州Carlsbad举办的主题为“一切都是数字”会议上说：我认为生产手机没什么意义。

Though he conceded that he once said the same thing about creating a music player, Ballmer said the better strategy for Microsoft is to partner with major handset makers.

"There will be an operating system that sits in every phone," he said. "Will they come from us or someone else?"

Apple Inc. is expected to introduce its first cellphone, the IPhone, soon.

Ballmer said the company "is very committed" to its music player, the Zune. The device launched in November, but has so far failed to make much of dent in Apple's domination of the market for digital music players.

Ballmer said the company will expand the Zune line, which he characterized as bare-bones, in an effort to get into the market quickly.

起先认为Zune只是微软的媒体播放器的名称，是一个类似于苹果公司iPod的产品，但目前看来“Zune”这个品牌将用于与之相关联的众多内容之上，贯穿于整个计划。

在与微软娱乐部门的Billboard的一次采访中他证实该计划的第一个产品将包括Wi-Fi技术以实现无线接入互联网，获取资源或用户间传输数据。Billboard还说将会有更多的产品出现在这个计划中，包括一种便携视频播放设备。此前传言中的便携游戏设备未被证实。

Zune包括了WIFI功能和30GB的硬盘，内置FM收音，3英寸的QVGA宽屏显示，音乐格式包括了H.264, MP3, AAC 和 WMA；正如大肆宣传说说的那样，它允许Zune和Zune之间的数据分享，你可以把你的音乐通过WIFI和你的朋友分享，在3天内3次听取收到的音乐。提供黑色、棕色及白色三种配色。预计正式上市日期为2006年11月14日，同期将发布13种官方外设附件。
